In a bidding contest, following question was posed:

You hold:
Scoring: IMP

The auction starts:
1 - Pass - 1 - 1
2 - 2NT - 3 - Pass
?

You'll probably disagree with this start, but it is what it is.

"You're playing with a pickup partner. 2NT was not alerted. What do you think 3 means, and what do you bid?"

All of the above responses had been brought up, so I wonder what the forum's choice is ;)

Indeed, I do not agree with 2S. In fact, I don't really understand it.

Whatever 3S means, I bid the obvious 4D and we'll see. If partner meant 3S as showing a spade stopper then that's just hopeless.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I have no idea what I have been doing. I have no idea what my bids mean after this start. 4 might be a cuebid in support of hearts, for all I know. If I had to guess, I'd guess that meaning.

So, I'm in a bind.

GP time. Partner has something interesting. I have no idea what he has that is interesting, but he likes it. 3 is not a preempt.

So, I make one call that might be understood no matter what he has -- 6.

what han said. I really don't understand the 2S bid.

As for what 3S means, I really hope partner never tries that on me...
But as a guess, since 2S showed a very good hand, often (but not always) a diamond single-suiter, I think partner is trying to say that he has a suitable hand and first round spade control and (I would guess) something good in diamonds.

2 should show fit, 3 shows A but its the only stopper, 4 is probably the right bid if 2 has been understood.

For me 2 agrees hearts. We would double with strong single-suited diamonds.

If you play support doubles then 2 is needed for strong diamonds without a spade stopper too good for 3 or not wanting to bid No Trumps.

The hand here certainly doesn't have heart support so it must be the long diamonds hand - although with only 15 hcp I can't see why the actual hand cannot bid a simple 3. In any case 3 perhaps should show half a spade stopper (assuming 2 showed diamonds not hearts).

Now I bid - well actually I am found out by my unlimited 2 bid earlier. My diamonds are not good enough for 5 and neither is my strength but partner will not imagine the stiff spade if I bid only 4. I think I am stuck with 4 though. Two overbids on one hand is too much for me.

Why does everyone think the cuebid shows a heart fit? What would you bid with a hand like xx Kx AKQJxxx Ax? I still think it was terrible on the actual hand, but we definitely haven't promised a heart fit yet.

In fact I think as an agreement it's better for the cuebid to deny a heart fit, though undiscussed I will always allow for partner having one since most people like to cuebid with one.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

You have a very good point as is there really a strong reason to play 3 or 4 as a preemptive jump raise after opening the bidding and PD's response ?

I think it shows a heart fit because I can double with that hand.
