AKxxx
xx
AQx
Jxx

Red against white, IMPs.

(1H) - p - (4H) - ??

Opponents do not have agreements about this auction, they play a standard system.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Classic 4 call.

You are between a rock and a hard place. If you pass and collect +100 (or, worse, -420) you lose big when you make game. And you know that partner cannot act if you don't act.

If you bid, and LHO has a big hand, you go for a number.

More and more you find better players treat (1) - P - (4) as a "transfer" to 4 if you have any excuse. You clearly have an excuse on this hand.

The only question is - does double make any sense on this hand? Clearly double does make some sense, since you have defense. But it is not likely to lead to a 4 contract.

There is one more advantage to the 4 call. Even when it is wrong (but not very wrong) the opps may not be able to work it out and they may bid one more.

Tough problem. I bid 4.

Against a strong club, where 4 can be anything from x xxxxx xx xxxxx to xx Qxx KJxx AQxx, I pass. There's just too much downside to bidding and we have possible book in our own hand.

Against a normal 4 call, I accept the transfer.

Wow I would never even consider bidding here. Partner didn't bid over 1H and we have decent defense.

Agree with Justin. There is some concern that we have xx in . Supposing that opponents bidding is based on a 10-card heart fit, that gives partner singleton. Why didn't partner double 1? Partner doesn't need more than 10 points or so for a takeout double holding singleton heart. So it seems like partner doesn't have much.

I think this would be a much harder problem if we held a singleton heart ourselves (and say one more diamond).

Couldn't partner have a reasonable hand with 3=1=(45) shape? I'd want a really good 5 card suit (to overcall) or more than minimum to double 1 with only 3 spades.

What makes you think partner has 10 HCP? Give LHO a normal opening hand of 13 HCP, and give RHO 5 HCP for his preempt. That leaves 8 HCP for partner, and he probably wouldn't double even with perfect 4144 shape.

First instinct was to pass with 5332 with some defensive tricks, but reading some posts that suggest 4S might be right.. I'm eager to find out which is best, but I know I'd still be passing at the table.

Pass for sure. It would be a reach to double but it might work.

WTP pass. If you are thinking about 4S its because you play too much Mp and not enough IMPs.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

I take it that bidding 4 was the winning action? After all, a double only costs 5 IMPs (unless they make overtricks, which hardly seems likely).

IMO _X = 10, _P = 8, 4 = 4.
Wow! I appear to be the only man in step with Han. I have primary support and 3.5 honour tricks. What more am I waiting for? OK :) I admit the doubleton is a drawback :P
