Partner is a passed hand. My hand is all controls. Despite the form of scoring, it seems that this hand should play in clubs, not notrump.

If you are going to play in notrump, you might as well bid 3NT, since it is unlikely that this hand will make exactly 7 or 8 tricks in notrump. If it makes as many as 8 tricks, it is likely to make 9.

3N. If pard has a 4441 10 count, he'll have to play this well. If pard has a semblance of a club fit, this looks like a claimer.

I'm the other pass voter. It looks kinda minimum.
The difference between theory and practice is that in theory, there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is.

3NT. Win the lead, cash the clubs, and endplay him to lead away from K.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I don't like 2NT as a contract here, it is too small target IMO.

I would normally go for the agressive 3NT, but 3 looks right.

hehe somehow all of 3C, 3NT and p sound like too small targets. I'll apply Gerben's "don't play 2NT with a 6 card suit" rule and bid 3C.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

I've never played in a BAM but I'm told its like MPs in a 2-table field.
The correct bid may depend on who is likely to declare at the other table.
Anyway I guess 3N = 10, _P = 7, 3C = 5.

WTP pass. Bidding 3Nt is crazy. You made a 2 level vulnerable overcall and partner wasnt able to bid 3Nt. What extras do you have ?

I hope they are in 3nt at the other table. As for 3C well it might work but at the same time with my balanced hand i have a hard time thinking ill make 2 more trick in clubs then in Nt.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

2N-(p)-?

In general, We belong in Game with 7+ controls and either 26+ playing points or 25+ playing points with a fit.

This hand evaluates to 14 playing points, and all of the defending controls rate to be in the LH (1S) opener hand. That's good placement for Us.

Advancer could have passed 2C. They could have raised 2C to 3C. They did not. They bid 2N because they have a maximum pass and think We might make 3N.

If partner passes lot's of 12 counts in 1st seat, you should probably bid 3N.

If partner is a believer in Light Initial action, you should probably pass.

If partner is middle of the road, you have a difficult decision to make.

No, that only tied the board, because the guy in the other room knows how to play a strip squeeze too, and is also too timid to bid the value of his card-play.

The result of the board is that partner has a 10 count with Ax clubs, and 2 was all-passed at the other table, making two. 3NT is makable but won't necessarily make. I think had I held this hand I woulda bid 3NT since I feel I'd have overcalled on KQxxxx and an Ace, but I can understand the other calls.

2NT = +120/+150 (win)
3NT = +600/-100 (win/lose)
3 = -100 (lose)

Eat it Gnasher! :P

But seriously I think a big advantage of pass in BAM is that you will win the board a lot even if you make 3 vs the other people being in clubs or playing the hand worse than you. It would be a shame to bid three and play it well for down 1 when the other table is 110 or something.

Yes, I understand this point, but, as Nigel says, it depends on the quality of the opposition, and what I think of my partner's cardplay relative to theirs.

Against this particular team, it sounds as though staying low was the right move. What on earth were they on, passing 2 on a 10-count with Ax and a spade stop?

I'd raise to 3NT as I always would in a MP event in Norway. Not used to playing BAM - maybe it's the wrong tactics there. But I had to know my opponents, wouldn't I?
Kind regards,
Harald

I think it's a pretty easy pass, surprised there is so much discussion about it.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.
