Various factors might be
have something much better
strength & range of notrump
forgetful partners
frequency of 5cM in your NT
too much info to opponents
etc

* ... if I wanted to be in a 5-3 major suit fit that badly, I would have opened 1M.
* 1NT-2♣; 2NT is a frequent problem auction.
Of course if you allow little leeway for 1NT (no upgrades, infrequent 1M on 5M-332), then these factors should be weighted less.

I believe that the USA currently hold only the World Championship For People Who Still Bid Like Your Auntie Gladys - dburn
dunno how to play 4 card majors - JLOGIC
True but I know Standard American and what better reason could I have for playing Precision? - Hideous Hog
Bidding is an estimation of probabilities SJ Simon

... when we open 1 NT with a 5 card major, we do not belive that the 5-3 fit will play better.

...because playing 3N with a 5-3 major suit fit isn't always a bad thing
...because of the problem of responder having an invitational hand when the auction goes 2♣-2N
...because I do use the 1N-3♣ and 1N-3♦ responses
...because I play that the 1N bidder can jump to 3 of a major with a 5 card suit and a max 1N opener opposite a stayman response, lessening the need.
...because puppet gives too much information to the defense.

Because 1NT is rarely opened on a 5-card Major.
Because it's not 'normal'.
Because I can always bid 3 of a Major after stayman to show 5 cards.
Because when I open 1NT on a 5-card-Major the hand is better suited for NT play.

But also because we use 1NT-2♣-2♦-2♥ and 1NT-2♣-2♦-2♠ for something quite complicated.

Presumably because losing garbage stayman is more significant.

-can play 2♦
-finds quickly 5-3 fit
-can stop in 2♠ with invitational hands
Cons:
-offers more informations to opponent than regular NT;
-bad continuations with 5m+4M;
-loses the ability to describe other types of weak/inv hands like 1nt-2c-2d-2h, 1nt-2c-2d-2s.
