Scoring: XIMP

You partner a BBO pickup vs 2 other juniors after your regular needs to go afk for 10 mins and you pick up this as East.

1D on your right alerted as 0-7 any. Unfortunately the opps aren't nice enough to provide a recommended defence. What's the plan?

If you double, the auction goes:

(1D*)-X-(1H)-X
(P)-??

Double.
When partner starts bidding hearts 3NT we will probably end in 3NT.
When the opps both bid hearts we find a fit and try for slam.

yes, without special agreement this must show something like a weak NT / t/o on , or any strong hand.

I would expect that partner holds 5's and a strong hand, probably with a wasted control.
Given that we have so little agreements I would bid 6 now, and I would expect that partner recognizes that if he holds the A he should bid 7.

If partner had 5 spades, why wouldn't he bid spades instead of doubling hearts? I assume that X of hearts should be takeout in this auction, as it is most analogous to a 1-(1)-X auction as anything.

Anyway, I also assume that X would either be a weak NT hand, or a hand that is too strong to start with a natural call. When you double, cue-bid, then bid 3 diamonds, you've set up the latter hand. I would bid 3 now, forcing, showing 3 of them. Partner should be able to make another call (if 3N, I'm bidding 4 clubs), and we'll get to the right spot if we both remember our fundamental principles.

#1 double is certainly the sensible thing to do
#2 4D.
.................................................................
#3 if I had bid 2H, than I have to bid 4D over 3H

Indeed. The obvious auction should have been:

(1) - x - (1) - x
(P) - 7

:)
