Hi Fred,

I think I better write my suggestions here than by email, so that others who observe the same can read this and need not report the same thing again.

General observation is that everything works fine, and it was a lot of fun hearing the program talk German to me. Most translations were fine. Here is a list of what should be improved in my oppinion, I (and hopefully others too) will extend this if I find more.

1. In the movie display the headline "Duplcate Results" is translated to "Kopieren Ergebniss". This re-translates to "copy result" which nobody would understand neither in German nor in English. A good translation I think would be "Boardzettel" ("traveller sheet").

2. When a player concedes all tricks it says "Ich verliere alles" ("I lose all"), which sounds like you just lost you last Euro at the casino. Better: "Ich gebe alle Stiche ab."

3. In the login dialog where you can type in the user-id and the user-id and the password, "Benutzername" is just a bit too long to fit there. I think "Spielername" ("Player name") would be fine, too.

4. The yellow pop-up telling you "Click for private chat. Right click to set status." was translated to "Privater Chat - Status setzen - Rechte Maustaste". I doubt that a normal new user would conclude that the first option is achieved by left-clicking on the name. I suggest "Klicken: links für Chat, rechts für Status". Should fit in there.

5. In the upper part of this yellow popup where the text "Mirja is playing at ralle's table in the Main Bridge Club." is displayed, the German translation omits the word "table", which sounds strange then. I would literally translate this: "Mirja spielt an ralle's Tisch im Hauptbridgeclub." Not that it should read "im" if it is the main Bridge Club. With private or public clubs it should read "... im Club 'The Beginner/Intermediate Lounge'". The Translation for players at tourney tables is fine.

I shall add more after I have played a tourney.

6. "Advanced" was translated to "Fortgeschritten", and "Intermediate" was translated to "Erfahren". Nobody would know if Erfahren is better then Fortgeschritten or the other way round. Maybe better translate intermediate to "Durchschnittlich", as "Mittelmäßig" has a negative touch.

7. "Anfänger" and "Neuling" have the same problem. I cannot think of a solution here. Maybe it would be the best not to translate these categories at all. The English words should be just fine for most Germans, as all except advanced are similar to words in German.

8. In a claim statement I saw the word "all" which was simply superfluous there. But in general, the claim statements were ok.

Thanks for the suggestions )))

ad 1: The translationsheet contains 1504 different words, sentances, verses. It is not as easy as it looks to translate as the relatives are not allways/most often known. I am sure this will be corrected in the offical version.

ad 2: We could also type : "Ich denke es ist offensichtilich, daß ich alle restlichen Stiche abgebe" or similar, but during translating we have to maintain a prelimited number of letters, "Ich verliere alles" is simply shorter.

ad 3: Would be fine too... (Aber nicht jeder Benutzer ist auch Spieler und vieeeeel zu lang ist das Wort nun auch wieder nicht.)

ad 4: It is currently translated to: "Privater Chat. Status setzen - Rechte Maustaste." and not "Privater Chat - Status setzen - Rechte Maustaste" But your suggestion is really very nice, Thanks.

ad 5: "... im Hauptbridgeclub.", "... im Club 'The Beginner/Intermediate Lounge" is due to the softwere not makeable, but will work on it. While I was working on the polish translation of BBO same problem occured. I think i have an idea how to solve it in a nice way. This will be : "Maaa spielt am mink´s Tisch. (Hauptbridgeclub)" I´ll need to use () as it is gramatically not makeable when a person is playing f.e. in the Beginners/Intermediates Lounge.

ad 6: I think the difference between "Erfahren" and "Forgeschritten" is clear. I do not like your suggestion of "Durchschnittlich".. who wants to be "Durchschnittlich" (ordinary, average)? Maybe Anfänger++ (Beginner++)?

ad 7: "Anfänger" and "Neuling" is same as "Beginner" and "Novice". If there is no difference between those , there is also none in english so lets make it german B)

ad 8: Will search it...

Thanks a lot for those suggestions, hope you find more !!
Please let Andreas (ack_hh) or me know.

Gruß
Marta

"Ich verliere alles" is simply shorter.
It is correct of course, but simply sounds funny. Is "Ich gebe alles Stiche ab." already too long?

"Maaa spielt am mink´s Tisch. (Hauptbridgeclub)"
Nice solution! However, it should read "... an mink's Tisch. ..."

ad 8: Will search it...
Maybe it was just the text the claimer entered manually as an explaination. This occurs so seldom that I am not used to it.

New observations, all minor importance:

9. When a boards is finished, at least after a claim, a message is displayed below the LHO/West hand stating the result. This occasionally reads in German: "Kontrakt erfüllt. +1". This just sounds a little bit odd to me. I would like better "erfüllt" for just made and "1 Überstich" for +1.

10. In cases where "abbrechen" (cancel) is too long, maybe just use "Abbruch".

11. For "Broadcast" I do not like "Funk" - maybe use "Durchsage" instead - really much better.

Problem here: this text consists of TWO fields (AD010, AD011), one reads
"Duplicate", the other reads "Results". So we have to translate both terms
in such a way that "Duplicate", "Results", and "Duplicate Results" are being
translated correctly, because I cannot determine if and when the fields are
displayed together or individually. Any suggestions welcome.

so A,B,C,... should clarify the level - independent from the language used.

AF023 reads "Contract made" (=Kontrakt erfüllt). I don't know where the "+x" comes from. Uday?

The +1 etc comes from the client. We can't currently support phrases that hold different translations based on the value of the {} variables. And, if i'm lucky, we never will :)

Just found another one:

12. When clicking on a private club where I am not member, the left button ("Apply") is blank and the right button ("Cancel") shows "bernehmen". I suggest "Senden" for the left button.
