Was he related to Walter?
And does that explain why so many people think that it is what it is? Because, in the end "that's the way it is".

:)
Yeah, I changed it to Walter, thanks.
Maybe this illustrates the problem. Of course I knew it was Walter, I can't explain "Charles"
And that's the way it is.

I just discovered that he had a colleague - Charles Kuralt - which is somewhat slightly assonant, so maybe that explains the curious case of Kuralt and Cronkite? Posted Image

Short version: I never thought of Walter Cronkite as "the most trusted man in America"

Maybe not. But I'll never forget https://www.youtube....rts/Ti3Mpv4fwt4

Since this thread has been unexpectedly dormant for a long time, here is a piece of news:

The US courts have granted civil and criminal immunity to all members of the Sackler family from future lawsuits related to Oxycontin. Sadly, the socialist Courts extorted almost $6 bn of restitution costs from the Sacklers.

I almost feel sorry for the poor things; they will suffer when they lose around 40% of their entire wealth!!!!

A $6 billion pay-out to rake in over $10 billion in profits seems like a good deal. Destroying millions of lives in the process is just business.

Tomorrow June 3rd, is National Egg Dy. See https://nationaldayc...g-day-june-3rd/,

Spoken like a true American! The rest of the world actually fixed this a while ago, making World Chicken Day the second Thursday in October and World Egg Day the second Friday in October. You will be asking me next to call a team winning a closed national sports league World Champions...

Bridge in the news:
Apparently Sweden is a pretty wild place if you're a man according to Britt Ekland (Sydney Morning Herald 16 July 2023)

I've never actually played or seen it, but curling is my favourite spectator sport.
Who knew that Swedes were capable of such shenanigans.

Britt Ekland said:

"I saw my parents and their friends. I thought marriage was a horrible situation. The women were at home ironing and cooking, taking care of all the children. And the man, you know, he was out swanning around – he had bridge nights, curling nights and boating nights. Plus a bit on the side. I said 'I will never marry'"

It's a Scottish game that the Canucks have made their own. Everyone else is just jumping on the bandwagon. The same thing can also be said about baseball - "America's game" is actually English in origin.

I have hopes that Sharrod Brown will run for president in 2028. I think he has the potential to be as well- liked as Reagan.

He certainly has the potential to be older than Reagan. I would personally like to see the next US President being under 75 when taking office...

As an 84-year-old, I heartily agree with this. There are many things that I can still do, at least reasonably well, but the office of president of the USA ? I am perfectly fine with saying that I am, and at 75 was, too old for that task regardless of what I might or might not have been able to do when I was, say, 50. Aging hits different people differently, I get that, but still... , Being able to mow my own grass is different from staying on top of the war in Ukraine.

Wow. I never realized he was that old. One of the curious aspects of aging is that old keeps moving further away, at least the discerning of it does.

Another problem with OF's being in charge of anything is that their concerns are things they were passionate about 50+ years ago.
The 1970's seems like a period full of novelty and excitement to a 70 year old, but the Vietnam war is over.
The current crop of altekaker's are driving the train off the cliff because they don't have the perspective needed to switch tracks and lack the insight to see the need.

there are sadly far too many of them still in control of too much everywhere
we still have a cold war do we. off to the bunkers
also far too much hypocrisy in them all
they turn their 70s rubbish on and off like a toggle switch at their convenience
I understand things like growing up, becoming more informed and even wise, I understand existential realities
But the way some went from justice warriors to oppressors is scary

I'm seeing this as a good example of what has gone wrong. Simple discussions quickly turn to accusations. Gilithin said he would like to see the next president be younger than 75, I hopped in and said that as an 84-year-old I agree. To me, that's common sense. But then we can't seem to leave it at that.

We OFs are stuck in the 70s. We turn it on and off at our convenience. We are hypocrites. Etc.

It's hopeless to launch a defense against such charges so I won't.

I see it as obvious that it would be better if our next president is 50 instead of 75. That's not the only criterion of course. But 50 rather than 75 is a plus. That's simple. And being a hypocrite is bad whether you are 75 or 50 or 25. That's also simple.

Age is most likely why I remember John Kennedy so fondly. What I'm uncertain of is whether it was my age at the time (12) or his youthful presidential look. Either way, I would prefer a someone in the 50-60 age range, old enough to have life experiences wihout being so old as to have the experiences be rusted.

How about 38? (or to be more precise, 39 by the time next year's elections come around)
