I'll debate between 4♣ and4♠, and choose 4♠. If I bid 4♣, I think partner will expect more defensive tricks. While a slam is possible if partner has the right hand, I'm not counting on it.

Oh, yeah, I've seen it do that, although usually it's EW in competitive auctions.
I think it's waiting to see if the opponents compete in its short suit. When that happens, it adjusts for the value of the void, and bids game.

I played a hand this weekend where an opponent GIB made a simple raise with 5-card support. When I made the mistake of balancing, it jumped to game.
