Well, if RHO opens just 1, you have a lot of options. All of 1, dbl and even 1NT seem ok.

I think the whole world would bid 1d, but if you think that means that 3d should be obvious you are gravely mistaken. At the one level it is much less likely that the auction will die in 1d than in 3d. There is more room to sort out your major suit fits. The risk of going off terribly in diamonds is smaller. The risk of not playing in your best fit is smaller. ETC ETC ETC

At MP's it would not be unreasonable to play a style where double followed by a conversion to spades shows 4 spades and longer diamonds. That would have to be a special agreement though.
