Playing generic 2/1 with 15-17 NT ... generally after 1D P 2C we rebid Diamonds on any hand that has 5+, otherwise bid a 4 card major (or 2NT). 2H says nothing about a spade stopper.

What is the path to 4H without it sounding like some sort of slam try?
If no one comes from the future to stop you from doing it then how bad a decision could it really be?

I defended 4 on this hand in an ACBL matchpoint pair game last night.

Our opps got to 4 on this auction:

1 - 2
2NT - 3
4 - All Pass

As for the hand, 4 is an iffy contract. I held, as West, AKJxx J97x xx xx. We beat 4 three tricks on three rounds of spades, declarer ruffing, followed by the losing club finesse. When declarer tried to make the hand by pulling trump, the expected 4-2 break beat the hand three tricks (yes, declarer could have done better, but the hand is always down 1).

If the trump fit were stronger - say, KJ9x opposite AQT, 4 would be much better.

I would be in 3N: 1 - 2 - 2N - 3N.

thru 2S, same. But only because 2NT rebid by opener is different hand in our style (not generic), so that part is accidental. After 2S, opener would rebid 2NT ---another accident of our size and shape sequences.

So, South ---oblivious to the fact that we need luck in the spade suit --- would raise to 3NT. This accidentally puts the hand with only 3 spades on lead, which probably won't matter on this hand. Without a spade lead would we play safely for down one?

Yes .. this was from he ACBL tourney last night and I know 4H goes down .. however it is the best game contract to be in on these cards so I'd like to think we should get there...

I think 4 is marginal double dummy and inferior single dummy. LHO didn't overcall 1, so spades are probably 4-4, or LHO has to find a lead from 3.

Perhaps the best MP contract is 2N.

1D - 2C! ( 2/1 GF )
2H( 4h, denies 5+d ) - 3C ( can't bid 2S since it would SHOW 4s; no Sp-stop )
3D ( temporizing; no Sp-stop either ) - 3H ( 3h )
4H ( I guess I'll try the Moysian fit ) - pass

Echoing phil. 99% of the time this auction should be the one at table.

With my reg p, I would have "succeeded" in staying out of game:
1D-2C(strongly implying no 4CM);
2H(stopper)-3D(natural and nonforcing, willing to give up if 3NT can't be played.)

Neither of us would have known we had a 4-3 heart fit. We both would have been acutely aware we were in an anti-field contract, playing a minor partscore with 25 HCP, and sort of expected a bad MP result just because of how often theoretically unsound 3NTs roll home.

3NT for me also, based on Phil's auction which looks normal to me.
