I think East has to make a try over four spades when it becomes clear that partner has a big distributional hand. I have some sympathy with East for not knowing what the best try is and deciding that pass is best, but it is unlikely that slam is worse than a finesse. In such circumstances, given that passing four clubs has already limited the hand, even six spades immediately could not be criticised with grand slam unlikely.

Surely someone has a pet tool to use as West; but I don't, and believe that the bidding by South, West, and North are just fine.

The only decision point is for East when 4S comes. So, East has two ways of looking at it:

"I opened the bidding, don't have extras...next" OR
"Hmm, I have a lot of good stuff in pard's suits and an outside bullet."

It is always easier when we are given all four hands to make the right choice, but I think East had to move over 4S.

Maybe it would have been better to bid 4D over 4C, but I think we are even better placed now that we haven't. West's spade suit is real, for sure, now.

Edit: This hand doesn't make me like Flannery.

Yup. Smooth sailing into slam after this. The opener is not a minimum anymore.

Likely to 6 in all but the most fine-tuned partnerships.

Well I counted up West's hand and reached 36 ZPs. Opposite partner's opening bid (26+ ZPs) you reach 62 ZPs which means you should be good for 12 tricks. So 4 by West is rather timid, I think. On the other hand, East has 29 ZPs and he can probably add at least 1 more for fit/concentration/whatever. I don't know if you can bid 7 or even if you should (I doubt it) but surely East should have done something. A pass over 4 seems really weird, especially if they're playing 2/1. He has good support, his partner is an opening hand, and he has a stiff in the opponent's bid suit. What more do you need?

Partner reversed at the 4 level? Isn't that forcing? ;)

Id say 5instead of 4 spades on west.
Im pretty sure we have a slam when p opens and have monster like this - and i wanna hear more now.

We will prolly end up in 6 which isnt that good tbh - but better than 4sp
