To be honest, I would transfer to 2 and hope to play there

However, looking at the hand with the Jacks, 10 9 etc and the weakness of the proposed trump suit, I think the best course of action is pass.

That of course can be a disaster if pd has 4 or 5 and was about to preaccept, going down or barely making 1 NT when 4 has a decent play.

When pd holds something similar to KQxx KJxx AKx xx I know its tempting to pass 1NT if you are not willing to go any further than 2, but those who transfer first will consider game if partner preaccepts, at least i hope they do.

Yeah, you shouldn't pass 1N with a 5 card major if you are going to bid game over a superaccept

Looks like a textbook transfer + 2NT. The only reason not to do this is if pard has a tendency to open 1NT on 14 and upgrade good 17s often.

I transferred and passed. Pard was close to a superaccept. Something like 16 4432 with AJTx of hearts.

10 tricks made on normal breaks. +170 was really bad though - 15% board.

By "was close to a superaccept", do you mean "had an automatic superaccept"?
