I am not sure, but it seems like the newer versions of this software (than what we are using) includes "tags" . However, with the search function we could generate our own tags by using concatentated terms. For instance, if people would either add something like the following to their post, or someone replying adds it to their reply, we could find related post fairly quickly.

So for instance,

playproblem --- would be a thread with a declarer play problem
suitcombination -- would be a post asking about how to play a suit combination
defenseproblem -- would be a defensive play problem
squeezeplay -- would be a hand/thread featuring a squeeze play
biddingquestion -- would be a bidding question
percentageplay -- would be a subset of play problems looking for best percentage play
doublesqueezeplay -- would be double squeeze,
etc

etc. I don't suspect these are even close to all that could be generated, nor even the choices I listed are best if we wanted to generate user created terms to assist in searching the hand record, but say you wanted to find an interesing play someone, lets say fred, posted. You could search for playproblem +fred... and they should pop up quickly. If you think this is a good idea, add suggested "tags" in reply. If you think it is not a good idea, share that too. ideally, we might be able to add tags to the software without having to go this add a unique term to all such threads. Time will tell.

I would prefer manual tagging to automated tagging.

Good idea. The tags will sort themselves out over time. Sensible, high frequency tags will live. Others won't. Suggest starting out with a small list of defined terms from the Bridge World Glossary and maintaining the list on this thread or similar.

You have another problem which I identified when doing a search in the forums for threads related to Gazzilli. I found 18 threads with Gazzilli spelt correctly. I found another 6 that were spelt incorrectly as Gazilli (1 z instead of 2).

A good idea. perhaps a moderator should maintain a restricted list of short key-words for tagging.(e.g. "call", "play", "law", "odds", "quiz", "question", and so on). You could associate more than one key-word with a post. The moderator would vet suggestions for new key-words. The moderator would try to keep categories orthogonal, to make searches more effective, omitting fewer relevant posts, and including fewer posts irrelevant to the searcher's interests..

Or maybe we can let people tag their posts themselves. I wonder if you guys would be in support of a short list of pre-approved titles and subtitles for new threads, disallowing all the rest.

We'll probably be upgrading the forum to the new version in the near future, so real tagging will be available.

tags.

We could create the ones we think will be best and then over time probably more will be added.
