I definitely do not think 3h is forcing. In fact I have made that bid several times and not meant it as forcing. This hand is not easy. I can understand 3d, 4h, and 5h. I think 5h is the right value bid but it will leave partner guessing. I'll try 3d then maybe 4h and see if it gets me anywhere.
"What's the big rebid problem? After 1♦ - 1♠, I can rebid 1NT, 2♠, or 2♦."

I do not, but I'm certainly open to suggestions (and I can think of a few myself)

I gave strong, no void, no extra length in the other suit as a meaning in the split-range approach. That is, 55(12) or 6511. I do not see why it could not have a similar meaning, just a little weaker perhaps, in the other approach. Whatever, it seems wrong for it to show a stopper.

That is what I'd bid with short clubs eg aqxxx akxxx kx x, but I'm sure something artificial would be better

Really surprised that some people would consider 3H to be forcing, I would have thought non-forcing would have been unanimous.

I'm going with 5H. I think that by bidding 3D first I won't convince partner of the great disaparity between the suits later.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.
