Matchpoints

In a typical advanced partnership, what would you expect 4 to be here.

1. Un-discussed?
2. What should it be after discussion?

Spade support, good hand which didn't have the shape for a first-round takeout double (unless he is a BBF member  ) Club Trick-source and control(s).

Something like QJxx, xx, xx, AQJxx, adjust to fit with your overcalling style to something just below what you would overcall.

At favorable vul there is no reason to assume p can have a
long strong suit of their own since they could have easily
competed over 1h with a preempt of some kind. Under
these conditions it has to be spade support and decent clubs.

At unfavorable it is still possible for p to have a hand such as
void xxx xxx QJTxxxx so make sure you discuss these auctions
with p. The spade support with clubs will come up a lot more
often than the suppressed 1 suited hand and that's the reason
this treatment is chosen ocer natural. You just have to be willing
to bite the bullet and pass when you have the rare 1 suited hand
you could not show earlier in the bidding (you can always hope the
opps x p in their suit then you can introduce yours (p will be void
and hate you of course hehe).

I can see how the auction DNE for those who would have acted in direct seat holding QXX XXX AJX KQJX.

Some of us don't necessarily double just to show 13 points and 13 cards in the four suits.

4C would be spade support, maximum or near max for the action taken thus far in the auction, and a source of tricks. Kxxx, Jx, xx, AQJxx or some such.
