For all that East, in the context of being a passed hand, is quite "good", he is rather walking into the jaws of death when the opponents have shown a game try, he is coming in at the 3 level, and for all he knows N/S might have been settling for a partscore (as indeed they were)
If he is going to bid, then in 2nd seat is the time to act, I think while N/S are still in the dark about their combined values.
