I wouldn't say miles, but he was just off. Most good penalty savers are walking toward the ball as it comes towards them in the air. Karnezis was even worse for the Greeks - not that it did him much good.

Then again it's a rule you never really see enforced and it makes a mockery of such an important process really.

They also don't enforce the rule of a steady approach (or something) on Neymar. There was also some differences between the rules of shootouts and normal penalties but I don't remember what they were.

The biggest difference is that for the shoot out the ball needs to be shot by one player. During the game, it is pretty much like a regular direct free kick. You can take a direct shot at goal, but you don't have too (see the Cruijff-Olsson penalty)).

Another important rule is that the ball needs to move forward continuously: There are no rebounds. As far as I know, this also means that a ball that ends in the goal off the goalpost and the back of the goalie does not count in the shoot out.

Have you seen the video of where Arsenal tried the Cruyff penalty in a match they were winning easily and completely messed it up ?

One I've not seen in a shootout (but have seen in normal play) is where the ball hits the underside of the crossbar, bounces in front of the line, but the backspin then takes it into the net, not sure if that's a goal.

If I read things right, the penalty should have counted, but was eventually disallowed in the Italian appeal's process. (It was a game ASV Tramin vs US Dro Calcio if you want to google yourself.)

Although obviously it wasn't a flawless performance by France, I still liked what I saw. So far, I can say they impressed me in every game of the tournament, something I can say of only France and Colombia. Brazil have been slow for most of their matches, Argentina were awful against Iran, Germany slipped up against Ghana (and not through conceding 2 freak goals or something), and the Dutch have an awful defence and no force. Not to say that France and Colombia are my number 1 and 2 favourites - just that they played the most convincing football so far. If I had to guess, I'd say it's Brazil, Germany, and Argentina, in that order, to win it. Maybe Colombia #4. But of course I hope the Netherlands goes as far as possible.

You surely can't have watched Ecuador v France... (although admittedly the French left out a lot of key players in that match).

1. It decided the game, hence there will be lots of replays of it and lots of comments.
2. Robben has a reputation for flopping a lot.
3. There is no way that Robben fell the way he did solely because of contact. There was clear contact, and maybe that contact would be enough to throw him off balance, but his flailing fall was acting up.

I agree that it looks like a clear penalty too.
