Congratulations to Frances Hinden's team (Jeffrey Allerton, Jon Cooke, Graham Osborne) who yesterday won the Schapiro Spring Foursomes, one of the toughest events in the EBU bridge calendar, playing four-handed throughout the five-day event.

As the only un-defeated team at the start of the final day, they could have insisted on an extra eight boards if they had been losing either the semi-final or final after 32 boards, but they didn't need this extra chance as they won both matches within the 32 boards.

We're quite smug about it :D

But being undefeated after the first 6 rounds gives you 3 huge advantages:
- you get a match off while 6 other teams play the quarterfinals
- you can choose your opponents in the semi-final
- you get an extra 8 boards in the semi or final if you need them (or, not and)

It's only the last of these that we didn't need/use. Playing as a team of 4, getting the evening off after 192 boards in 72 hours, with two more matches due the next day, is a huge relief.

Last year we were the undefeated team after 6 rounds as well, and our semi-final options were (i) the UK Bermuda Bowl team, (ii) the Lavazza team of world-class Italians, (iii) a team containing Auken, Welland, Zia etc. This year there was one (very slightly) softer team available whom we rapidly selected and let the English & Israelis fight it out between them.

More congratulations to Frances' team (with Peter Lee instead of Jon Cooke) who yesterday won the Four Stars Teams at Brighton.
