Table result: 6+1 S

South's 5 bid was agreed to be quite slow. As I was the oldest player at the table and it was just a side session we chose not to call the director when we played this in Brighton, but say we had done so. How would you rule?

5+2 for sure. OK, the AI marks south with something, but not two first round controls.

Agree - I think N told his story, 3 looser hand with both minors, if he wanted to be in slam he would have choose to bid 5S/5N, so he has reconsidered his hand to be good enough to accept pds slam invite...

Slam dunk rollback.

I've (gently) called on pairs I thought were fairly new in an effort to break a bad habit whether it mattered or not.

Did anyone ask South what he was thinking about?

Does it really matter as far as what it allows North to do?

And is it really hard to imagine what he was thinking about? I know I'd have some thinking to do with that hand -- it looks pretty good opposite a partner who wants to force to the 5 level. But the void in one of partner's suits is a misfeature, and much of the strength in the majors is likely wasted.

well, clearly North's 4NT call may be flawed in some way. What way? Maybe he has three hearts. Maybe he was thinking of 5NT instead of 4NT. Maybe he was wondering whether to bid 4NT at all. Does it matter. I don't know, but a question and answer would give me time to think about it. :-)

Is this is a case of hesitation Blackwood? South COULD be deciding whether to give preference to clubs or diamonds assuming partner has a massive minor- 2-suited hand. So I do NOT believe that this is the slam-dunk everyone thinks it is. My bet is that South was wondering whether 4NT was Blackwood or the minors and then decided that 5 Diamonds covered both eventualities - this would take time - especially as the 4NT bid was pretty unexpected.

Suppose South had the Q543 of clubs and No Ace of Hearts. Wouldn't he have reason to think before bidding 5 Diamonds? In which case 6 Diamonds isn't demonstrably suggested. Yes I know NS statements will be regarded as 'self-serving' however they shouldn't be disregarded per se.
No matter how well you know the laws, there is always something that you'll forget. That is why we have a book.
Get the facts. No matter what people say, get the facts from both sides BEFORE you make a ruling or leave the table.
Remember - just because a TD is called for one possible infraction, it does not mean that there are no others.
In a judgement case - always refer to other TDs and discuss the situation until they agree your decision is correct.
The hardest rulings are inevitably as a result of failure of being called at the correct time. ALWAYS penalize both sides if this happens.

I would say that South was too good a player to consider something so absurd.

Perhaps it was simple Blackwood? Just as the adjustment to 5D+2 is simple.

Lovera doesn't think is a case of exitation Blackwood. Infact if the first bid of player at four level is 4NT is this one considered as informative double searching fit in a minor (here diamond) but S has also a (good) selfsupporting heart suit than ..slow 5 raised to six by partner considering 2 limiteted about force.

I wouldn't rule without a poll. What would comparable players do, given the auction and North's hand? And as a player I would call a director.
