Matchpoints. Good partner but unknown opps. NS vul.
We play 1NT by an unpassed hand is a one round force, but is only "mostly" forcing by a passed hand.

In preparation for a later "discussion" with partner, how do you view the bid choices available to North?

Out of curiosity, what is the range of your 1N opening bid?

We open 12-14, but the same poll choices would apply if 15-17 NT. Playing 15-17, I would open 1NT with a five card major only if it was a weak suit like Jxxxx.

I think it is flawed logic to take suit quality into account. Had you been playing 15-17, my only concern about opening 1N is that the playing strength may be just a shade too much for an average 17 count.

But that is all irrelevant to this thread. I voted 3N, as a slight overbid but practical. Uncontested I would just have bid 2N, but the KJx of Diamonds have become stronger. It is I think a harder decision at MP as stated.

At IMPs, I close my eyes and bid 3NT. I had an excellent 17 count that grew even bigger (KJx D have almost been converted to AQx except I can't duck any). Partner probably have Cs and Hs.

Now at MPs. Oh well, you said partner was good? He'll manage to make 9 tricks. At red he probably didn't bid with a lousy 4-5 count.

starting with x to show extra values and no clear direction seems right on target here. Yes we could try 2/3 NT but either would just be guesswork. I prefer to hear more from p before deciding where to go and how high. If p makes minimal noise then staying low seems preferable.
