I think it is flawed logic to take suit quality into account. Had you been playing 15-17, my only concern about opening 1N is that the playing strength may be just a shade too much for an average 17 count.
But that is all irrelevant to this thread. I voted 3N, as a slight overbid but practical. Uncontested I would just have bid 2N, but the KJx of Diamonds have become stronger. It is I think a harder decision at MP as stated.
