The question asked is"pass or open?".My answer is I shall open 1H. Whether one applies the losing trick count (6 losers) or total points count 12 plus10 = 22 and HCP count,I am convinced that this hand deserves to be opened 1H.

I would open simply because:

1. My side rates to have the balanced of honor strength (especially since RHO passed in third chair) - my side's expected honor strength is close to 22 of the 40 HCP.

2. I have a good pattern that makes game very possible opposite constructive values with a good heart fit - and partner virtually always has at least 8 or 9 HCP on this auction. E.g.,

4H is virtually cold opposite both of these hands and game will have good play on countless other hands with a heart fit.
