MrAce's MP problem:

I rank
1. 4 = CUE. High-card raise. Consultative,
2. 4 = NAT. F1. Then 5. Attempt at description,
3. 6 = NAT. Might make OR opponents might sacrifice.
4. 5 = NAT. No mucking about.
5. Double = T/O. Misdescriptve but might get you to 3N.

4C? I feel like 4S should promise a control here.

I have the same ideas as nige, but I think game is more likely than slam, so I would rate 4, 4, 5, 6 on that order. Both 4 and 4 require some form of agreement, not sure if I would bid them if I had none.

I can't see how we can tell partner what we need to here. If 4S promises a control then we can't bid it, and if it doesn't then partner is going to be hard pressed to judge well anyway.

I'm going to bid an agricultural 5D. Partner is likely to have 2 spades due to opponents bidding and a spade control is unlikely. Partner would need something close to a strong NT and he might have either doubled or bid NT with that hand.

4C may well be more descriptive (FNJ?) but it doesn't really get us anywhere in practice. If we get either 4D or 5C back (I think likely) we're no better off - I presume we bid 5D and be done with it.

4 is ok if it specifically denies a control but I don't think it does. 4 and then 5 gives a bit of space and is more encouraging than the agricultural 5.

By opponents bid & not doubling,North is expected to have 13/14 pts.For a slam South requires A,KQ,K(or QJ assuming K with East) & also second round control of with North which imo is not possible to verify if there is no prior agreement so likely possibility is to reach game.

I would just start with x. If pd bids 4c then we can get excited, if not then we can just bid 5d which should I guess show some kind of mild slam try.

Isn't this situation made for the "Cue Bid" double? How else can we ask partner for a positional stopper? If partner bid's 4 and not 3N, we follow with 5.

Double

I'm equating it with the situation where a negative double does not promise both unbid suits, just 2 (or more) places to play and hope that partner got the memo.

Since I have no idea where we are headed yet this gives max room for partner to help me out and I'll pull hearts to diamonds. Come to think of it, 6 may be on when partner bids 3nt which is not a sure thing (Ax with partner and a club or diamond loser) so I'm likely bidding 4 over it even at matchpoints and we can still play in 4nt in a pinch.
