4D. Might change my mind if you told me something about the field.

4D looks like a transfer to 4S too often for me to feel happy about it, but 5D feels like a transfer to -500 against 450/480 too often for me to be happy that way either. Besides, that club king may be useful on defence.

In the old, old days, I’d bid 1N, though I’d prefer favourable vul. If doubled, I run to clubs first😀

These days I bid 4D, because I’m old.

Solid 8 card suit and a couple of stiff honors, with an opp. that has opened, it is 4 from me also. Let partner decide whether he wants to bid 5 if they bid 4.

5, though I have a sneaking suspicion that 4 is better. I've probably played too much IMPs.

Also 5. Might cost too much, but I want to leave them to make the last guess.

4. With only seven guarenteed tricks 5 looks a tad overaggressive. If it were favourable vuln I'd bid 5.

I bid 5, went 3 off doubled for a 10% board. A bit unlucky with a somewhat unexpected heart ruff in the non-opening hand (opener was 5521 or something). In hindsight I think 4 is better, yes it's something of a transfer to 4S as Mike says, but partner is still there and can sac in 5D if they deem it correct.
