I am constantly amazed on how well simply bidding one's hand works out and the genius clever tricky bids fail.

A 7-4 adds up to an 8 card suit (Kit Woolsey). This nice ODR looks like a 4♣ call.

Takes away their Texas transfer too ;)

For me, 3♣ is enough. Two singleton aces and weak suits looks like a lot of defense and not-so-huge offense to me. Also, do I really want to preempt them out of their 5-3 major fit?

I have no problem with 4♣.

I also would not consider this high ODR. Aren't honors in short suits low ODR?

Vulnerability is important here. 3C is certainly reasonable at any vulnerability, but 4C is not when vulnerable against not.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

ODR is again… offensive/defensive ratio?
So a high ODR is a suitable hand to be declarer and visa versa?

Maybe we could put together a glossary of bridge acronyms and lingo.

that's correct Kathryn. So this hand is not half as offensive as, say:

x
QJ10x
KQJxxxx

With that, everybody would be bidding a LOT.

(talking about lingo, LOT usually refers to the law of total tricks but here it does not).
