I REALLY think that EVERYONE should HAVE to post (at the VERY LEAST) the SYSTEM he/she plays

I GET SO SICK of seeing
name" "PRIVATE
system "PRIVATE"
skill level "PRIVATE"

NO problem with "NAME" being "private" ------------- EXCEPT why not ask folks to call you "xxxx" where xxxx is ANYTHING you declare :P

BUT SYSTEM "private" :P   :P  I REALLY ( if it's possible to do so) should mean that THAT person should NOT be able to register for BBO

It's SO difficult to LOOK in MBC for partners without at the VERY LEAST -"SYSTEM" filled in ( and that's NO guarantee that they KNOW system ) BUT HOPEFULLY----- if the say (for example 'SAYC' I can ask WHAT conventions {within SAYC} they play)

That's SO much better in CASUAL play - which what happens to me MOST of the time ( No problem in MBC) BUT A BIG paoblem in tournaments ( mainly INDYs I admit)

Well, I disagree with all of the above.
Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.

Psyche (pron. sahy-kee): The human soul, spirit or mind (derived, personification thereof, beloved of Eros, Greek myth).
Masterminding (pron. mPosted ImagesPosted ImagetPosted Imager-mPosted ImagendPosted Imageing) tr. v. - Any bid made by bridge player with which partner disagrees.

Actually I'm a mugwump (someone who sits on a fence with his mug on one side of the fence and his wump on the other).

Like Bearmum, I also dislike seeing profiles that offer no useful information. I don't know whether to try partnering or opposing the person.

On the other hand, I believe that people do have a right to privacy. But, as Bearmum suggested, it is not particularly difficult to just make up a name people can use for you -- it can even be an androgynous name if gender is an issue.

Not indicating what bidding and carding systems one uses seems silly also.

So here is an idea: The only reasons I can see for keeping one's profile so empty is that either you only login to BBO to watch other people play (perhaps even only vugraph broadcasts), or you only play with and against people you know. Why not have an indicator for each of these things in the profile and perhaps a more visible indicator on such a person's name (perhaps we could squeeze in one or two more colours)?

- One such indicator could be "Spectator only"
- The other could be "Only participate with known members"

You could always just ignore them. They ain't harming anyone.

Or, you could address them by their log-in name. Or if that is inconveniently long, by an abbreviation of the same. Why does a ficticious name in the name field add anything?

It is not hard to assume standard methods in the absence of indication to the contrary.

Sorry bearmum, but I completely disagree! I only agree with:

I GET SO SICK of seeing
name" "PRIVATE
system "PRIVATE"
skill level "PRIVATE"

But that's why I ignore these people, and don't allow them to play at my table.

Imo, it's not obligated to give away your name, skill level,...

- If you sit down at a table and you start playing, what system do you play without discussing it? Sayc (or some sort)...
- Skill level, we've discussed this before, so I won't get into that again.
- Name, when someone doesn't want to give away his name, it's his right. So I don't care. I myself don't give away my real name as well, but if you ask you can always get it ofcourse
- Email adress, why do you need to give that? So some funny person can start spamming? I think we all HATE spam, so why encourage it? If you do something wrong and someone else at the table gets it in his head, he just goes to all kinds of sites which have mailing lists and you're screwed!

It's all about privacy, and I respect everyone's privacy. But I just want to know what kind of person sits at my table, and if they don't fill this in, I just reject them...

I would add to the dislike list the globe as a no nationality sign. One of the great assets of BBO is sitting opposite a Nepalese player, playing againts Australia and Guatemala. I do respect privacy, but show something both of your views on bridge and your own skill, and a glimpse of your personality, albeit only your country.

I know several people who are very dutch and appear nevertheless with russian names, tsech flags and so on. It gives me a glimpse of their personality;-). I like it. But Private, private, private and a globe.... I hate it. Try partnershipdesk, people listing themselves with a triple private&globe. Skip on to the next name!

PS I like to know where people come from because I like to see different languages and try to understand, even speak them. Was once in Mamaia Rumania for a bridge tourney, learned the bridgeterms, and was very proud recognizing in a bulgarian conversation pupa di karo as diamond king;-)

In the profiles I see

name: ....
email: .....
skill level: .....

not

name: ....
system: .....
skill level: .....

I am using BBO-version 3.7.3. I think it's one of the latest versions. I do believe adding "system" is a good idea. But since it's not there yet, I don't think you can blame anyone for not mention it. And many people use the "other" section to describe what they like to play.
