For me 2NT is pick-a-minor by meta-agreement, so I have no alternative to a somewhat heavy 3C.

2nt is natural for me but pard doesn't promise the world's fair so I bid 3 and hope to bring it home after a lead.

I'm not convinced notrump is right (bad positioning in the red suits) unless pard takes another bid.

I would pass, I have excellent defense and I only have a 4333 10 count opposite a balancing double. If we have a game, I do not expect partner to pass it out. If we do not have a game I expect defending 2S to be better than playing 3C, we have no assurance of a club fit and even if we have a club fit half of our hand is KQx of spades.

It is worth discussing with your partner if you play X here as penalty (traditional meaning) or responsive (modern meaning). Playing responsive doubles, you would usually double with this shape if you desired to bid (I would still pass playing this...I have KQx of spades!).

Thanks, here's the full hand. I bid 2N (natural), partner understood it as showing minors so we played in 3C.
I will be sure to discuss what X and 2N mean here with my partners.
