Montreal, then we wouldn't hear "He speaks French" as an insult :)

Give it to Port-au-Prince, they need the business badly.

Would New Orleans have the same effect?

Speaking as a Westerner... anywhere on the east coast is fine with me. Keep the hot-air pollution downwind of the rest of the continent, thank you very much.

The country is so polarized these days, do we need two capitals?

Fitting, since if we removed the government from DC, it would be the next Flint, MI.

I've always been fond of the idea of putting it in the geographical center of the 48 contiguous states — which is somewhere in Kansas, iirc. I think we should build a new "capital city", and then leave it empty. Send all the politicians, lobbyists, and bureaucrats home, with a "thanks, now go find a real job" letter. :P

My first choice was somewhere in Alaska, but as finance matters stand, it must be sold to China within few decades

In Alaska we tried building a new capital city from scratch in the 1970s. Discovered it was very expensive, and gave up before we got very far.

The owner of one of our bridge clubs lost so much money in the ensuing land speculation fiasco that he was working into his 80s rather than retiring.

Why do we need a capital? Why not just do everything via teleconference? It would keep our representatives in better contact with their home districts (i.e. they could actually live there), and maybe they could also work more than three days a week... Plus it would save money.
