Complain all you want about the flag, but you had 4th and 1 on the Dallas side of the 50 and didn't go for it.

I am a Cowboys hater from way back, and I was astonished at the non-call on the obvious pass interference.

But I was apoplectic when Detroit punted on 4th and 1. Detroit deserved to lose.

non-call was obviously correct. calling a penalty against either team would be a total joke.

I like how all the vines "proving" it should have been a flag start right after Pettigrew releases the facemask.

(I think Hitchens also grabbed Pettigrew's jersay before the facemask, so maybe defensive holding would have been a fair call?)

I guess the free kick vs. punt thing is a fair point, nevertheless I maintain that it is not a significant strategic choice very often.

Should the Pats have gone for it with 14 seconds left? Only risk would be a kickoff return into field goal range.

Hm... if you kick the free safety kick out of bounds, do the opponents get it at their 40 or what happens?

I thought they should have just run some normal running plays on the previous downs instead of kneeling.

Yeah. He may have just expired as an NFL QB. Or maybe he has some undisclosed injury issues that the bye week will help with. We'll see soon enough with a good team arriving in Denver.

Question answered, it would seem.

I'd like to see Peyton play one more year with Brock Osweiler getting a significant amount of playing time, when game situations allow, to both keep Peyton a little less banged-up and allow Osweiler to grow into the starting role.

Yeah I saw that about the injury. Not surprising really, looking at his sudden and drastic change in performance.

Is Osweiler their QB of the future? Don't know. If not, maybe they can draft someone.

He is supposed to be. They signed Manning and Osweiler at the same time, with the intention of grooming Os to eventually take over. Manning has not been cooperative in aiding the transition, insisting on staying in games when he shouldn't. (I guess John Fox thinks that Manning is the head coach.)

Peyton is set to earn $19m, more than any closer in MLB...

If it's ever right to fire a coach after 4 seasons of 46-18 football with 4 division titles, I definitely applaud this move with firefox. Gotta win now. Bring in some hotshot college coach, let Peyton run the offense for one season, and see what happens.

Amusing tidbit: the Pro Bowl is meant to be coached by the staffs of the two highest-seeded divisional round losers.

However, neither the Broncos nor the Cowboys currently have a head coach under contract.

Mike Mccarthy is really one of the worst in game coaches by far. Runs the ball all the time when he has Aaron Rodgers (even when he's not injured). But his punting/field goals are just amazing.

He is a 9 point underdog against Seattle. Due to 2 lucky turnovers, they get the ball to 4th and goal at the 1 twice. Both times he kicks FIELD GOALS. FIELD GOALS!!! I mean yeah it's absurd already since the EV of getting 1 yard at the 1 yard line is higher than 3 points. But on top of that, even if you miss they have to start at their 1 yard line which gives you safety equity, and typically good field position when you get it back. And on top of that? You have a completely shitty defense and a great offense and you are a 9 point underdog! It is mind blowing.

He kicked a third field goal later in the first half that was 40 something in the wind on 4th and 1. I want him to lose so bad but apparently the seahawks cant even get a first down so the field goal strategy is elite. Best coach ever.

@NYT4thdownbot is the best:
"Bots don't cry...
Bots don't cry...
Bots don't cry..."

It seems the bot doesn't mind the field goal (when ignoring the wind) though - I guess up 16 versus up 13 is a big deal:

Ignoring the wind and ignoring that you are by far the worse team (and 1 half where you got 4 turnovers and scored all of 16 points from them does not change that you are by far the worse team and on the road) is a big mistake. The chances of making a field goal go way down from the usual average when there are 50-60 MPH winds

Does the 4th down bot take into account how much time is left in the game btw? Because if it does not obviously that favors going for it versus kicking a FG in that spot.
