I'd bid 2 because I think 1NT would encourage partner to think I hold a more balanced hand. He can still ask about spade stop later if we belong in NT. I wouldn't want to give up on a minor suit contract with that distribution. So 2C it is for now, let's see what happens next.

2C. Certainly not 1NT.Clearly not a ridiculous pass either, expecting to pass for penalties.

At MPs, I'm passing this planning on converting a double to penalties. The problem with this is that it leaves us badly placed if partner bids 2H, if that happens, I think I bid 2NT. I think +100 vs +90, or +200 vs partscore is too likely for me to bid 2C.

With a natural diamond open, 2. You want to imply you may not have anything in hearts, and that you are not balanced.
With 1 showing an unbalanced hand, 1NT for us shows a 3-suiter short in partner's suit : perfect.

2 or pass.

I'd pass.

X for me, we do not play support doubles, X shows 4 clubs, 2 shows 5. For us the diamond showed 4 and we open 1 with 4-4m whether we hold 4M or not.

If I choose to pass p will realize I probably have one of two hand types==

boring balanced and weak (my normal hand by far) or a hand that has made
a penalty pass. The downside of the pass is that p will have a tendency
to bid 2h playing me for the boring balanced hand simply because this is
a game of %. If I were instead to choose

2c

While I may be giving up on a possible big penalty I can now pass a 2h bid
with little fear since p knows I may be very short. This is a very reasonable
trade off at MP where not getting into a poor 2h contract is just about as
important as hoping to collect a big penalty. At IMPS I might be more tempted
to pass and hope for the penalty.

Canonical 2.

Not pass because that would encourage partner to think you have a balanced 12-14, in which case he will bid a confident 2 on a moth-eaten 5 carder.
Not 1NT because of [see above].
Not dbl (unless you play it as penalties).

So 2, which, by showing 9+ cards in the minors, also conveys the message "I'm not too fond on playing hearts. Proceed at your own risk".

2 seems clear to me.

If you choose 2 partner will correct to 2, next decision is yours

Pass. That void doesn't make me happy, plus it's MPs so not going to stretch on a misfit. I don't think I'd stretch at IMPs either TBH. I don't expect much with partner. He didn't try for NT, he didn't jump to 3. Also, regretting I didn't pass for penalties but such is life :)

Pass. I agree with diana_eva, plus there's still the chance for LHO to make a very delayed raise with Qx in spades.

Pass. 14 HCPs, no fit. What else do you want?

To me, these decisions (2 followed by pass) are so obvious that I am wondering why this wasn't posted in the Expert forum. ;)

2NT

I think this (coupled with the earlier 2) describes the hand, in terms of both distribution and strength. I am not delighted to play in diamonds on a mere preference, and we are as likely to make as many tricks in NT. Partner will hopefully have passive stops in hearts, and I think this is a better contract. It also allows partner the opportunity to bid game with a better than minimum hand.

2 I would take as merely an unassuming cue bid (in the literal sense) and while forcing, does not describe the hand.
Pass, while possibly being the only positive score, seems to be aiming too low.

After 2D I pass, what else?

Opposite x xxxx Kxxxx Axx it is huge; opposite a more mundane hand with wastage in hearts not so much. The fact that the hand has been posted by Fluffy suggests that partner's hand might be along these lines.

I think a hand like that shd bid 3, not 2. THAT is a huge hand after 1 2.
