I guess Dbl followed by Dbl.

I bid 4.

If the bidding continues, (4) pass (pass), I will double.

I'd bid 4. It might be nice to be playing double as asking for a heart stop, but it doesn't show that. It's for takeout, and partner will expect length in both minors. If I double and LHO bids 4, we'll never be able to judge whether to compete or what suit to compete in. Even if it goes dbl-pass, and partner has a heart stop, he won't often bid 3NT, because that's not what he's been asked to do.

Having bid 4, on the next round I'd pass it out. Double would invite further action, which I don't particularly want to do given that partner passed over 4.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Oh I am definitely bidding my AKQ 6th suit. No question about it on my part. And if 4 h comes to me I have an easy pass.
I am bidding because there are a lot of good things that can happen besides the fact that no other call can tell pd better than 4 d
- Opponents may let me play it.
- instead of forcing pd to bid or pass double, when he has no clue that my hand is worthless if god forbid someone is short in diamonds, bidding 4 d gives him more flexible options.
-they can bid 4 and pd may double, which I now can pass easily. Or pd passes it to me and I can pass easily.
-pd can bid 5 dia and we make or we convince them that we are making.

4, a highly descriptive bid. An informed partner tends to make better decisions.

The real question here is <is 4d forcing or not> and it makes a huge
difference in any further contested auctions. IMHO the range of a 1s overcall
is so vast that it is impossible for 4d to be forcing and I would play it as
having even less potential for making 5d than a 5d bid. If your partnership
plays 4d as forcing here then you might as well quit reading the rest of this
opinion because your side is committed to game. If I were playing 4d as forcing
I would pass unless playing with a partner that always makes strong overcalls.

While I am a dia short for 4d I have decent suit quality which helps minimize
the danger of bidding this way at unfavorable. The 4d bid quite properly warns
p about the 1 suited nature of my hand and limits my power since I could have
not only bid 5d but I could also have chosen x followed by some number of
diamonds with stronger hands. Bidding 4d here allows me to feel much safer about
any action p may take if the opps continue to bid and I can respect a pass of
4h.

I also bid 4D. I do not consider it forcing nor a safe bid - but a necessary one considering the vast range of the 1S overcall.

Only RHM and PhilNumber play these bids as forcing. A few people were unsure, then Justin said "non-forcing" and that was that.

4d now and let partner tell me his judgment over 4H.
I go with HIS Pass or Dbl over 4H.

IMO
  • Over 2: 4 = 10, Double = 9.
  • Over 4: Double = 10, Pass = 9, 4 = 8. Parners tell me I don't double enough :(
