Rubber bridge. They have game and 60 below the line.

You're second in and the bidding goes:

4 P P 4 /
P P 5 P /
P ?

What do you do now?

The trouble here, of course, is that the 4 bid could be anything. I am bidding, and will probably suffer the usual consequences of those who try too hard to prevent the opponents getting a leg...

Even if we are SURE the opps are not making 5c it is a cruddy idea to x with this hand since p might think we actually have stuff. The real question seems to be do we have enough to try and MAKE 5s. Maybe but probably not and so it seems best to just take our small probable plus and hope we get luckier next hand. P had a chance to bid over 5c and failed to try anything so the odds seem stacked against us making 5+ spades.

What do you do now? Answer: Absolutely nothing at rubber bridge with a game against you and 60. Let it go.

Ah, I didn't see they have a game. I am passing.

With 60 below the line, your LHO opponent could be sandbagging over 4 if slam seems a remote possibility. There's no incentive for LHO to bid on as any making part score of 2 or better secures the rubber. If LHO does have values, a sacrifice at 5 could be costly for little effect on the rubber.

You do have a good fit with partner, but not much else. Partner is unlikely to have more than a doubleton in , so the stiff isn't necessarily as valuable as it seems.

I rank
  • 5 Partner's pass is probably invitational if not forcing (although in this context it might be different).
  • Pass = Middle of the road.
  • Double = Speculative.

"Partner's pass is probably invitational if not forcing." Really? Partner can create a forcing pass situation by balancing over 4 while I am silent? This is news to me.
