I don't like over-calling on weak NT type hands - particularly at the two level. I doubt that we will win the auction and if we did win the auction the contract would probably not play well.

But, I do want a diamond lead and the vulnerability is most favourable for competing part scores. In a club setting, over-calling is probably playing with the field.

I'm bidding 2 because:-

a) It's lead directional
b) The suit is good
c) I have enough high card points
d) I have good honour cards
e) It stops them using Drury if 3rd in hand is light
f) It's likely we will be outbid anyway if they have spades
g) You already know partner's range so unlikely we will get carried away
h) The vulnerability is right

and, bridge is a BIDDER'S game.

I usually don’t like with a 5-bagger but we are NV, the suit is appealing with top honors and 98 in case something turns ugly, and E might have stretched to open. Maybe we can push them to 3S or make 3D.

It's MP you can't pass because it "might get ugly" (ok so your overcalling)
So what, if you lose at trick because partner didn't lead a diamond it is just as ugly as going for 500.

Automatic 2 overcall for me.

Decent suit, opening values, NV, why not?

Especially at MPs, it may be important to let partner know where your values are at.

Open polls are great because you see who voted for what. For example, Nullve, who keeps winning BBO daylong competitions, voted "Close but Pass".
