A natural 4 for me.

Younger me may consider 1 for a moment

3NT if playing this as a good 4 level minor preempt, 4 otherwise.

Yeah, 3 is too low (though just barely at this vulnerability), but I don't really want to keep partner from playing in 3N if they have K and assorted values.

This is a good hand for having agreements where you don't have a 4 preempt available (because you're playing some form of Namyats).

1, my partner always has a holding like Qx, Axx, QJxxxx, Kx where 3N makes and 5 doesn't if I bypass it

Hi,

you could pass.

It is certainly a reasonable 4C opening bid, 5C is a bit too much at this colors,
you will quite often hear the opp. make a (T/O) X and play it there.

With kind regards

I would normally open a hand with an eight card suit at the four level but decided due to the unfavourable vulnerability to open 3, which also leaves 3NT on the table if I have pre-empted partner. I got battered:

Both major suit finesses are wrong and the defence managed to engineer a heart ruff after I took the losing finesse so one down for -200 and a bottom:

3 N +140
4 N -100
4 N -50
3X N +200
4 N -50

What has any of that got to do with your choice of bid?

Sanity check. I feel better if my choice to pre-empt is in good company. Twice in that session I made red against green pre-empts and both times I got doubled and 0%. I was wondering on this hand if anyone would consider opening 1 which flashed through my mind.

Only 3C for me. Partner is still there and could have a decent hand with Kx of clubs where 3NT is on.

For once we agree, even Jx might be enough.
Although I am still struggling to define 4 as I previously played Namyats and did not have it available.

I struggle to see why 4 went down with a sane North at all 5 tables, especially on the probable A lead.

Agreed with all of that, though it sounded like you connected your decision with being battered / getting a bad result - did every other table open 1?
