I don't think you should factor in the hope/expectation that you will be able to use the BBO web-client into your decision as to whether or not to buy an iPad. I do think that there will eventually be a way to play on BBO through the iPad (or just about any other device that can run a proper web-browser) that will not depend on Flash.
But I really can't predict how long "eventually" means in this context. Neither "a few months" nor "a few years" would shock me.
Probably it is already possible to kibitz BBO tables through the iPad (in the same way that this is possible on the iPhone - www.bridgebase.com/mobile).

It definitely is - that's what I did for a few minutes when I happened to be in a store that had iPads on display. The screen size was great!

We would even send a check to you to help defray the costs. The ipad is easy to see for older folks and BBO at large is what we would desire. Thanks, gail and Bill Zanger

I can't make any promises or any guesses as to when, but I suspect there will eventually be a solution for you and other iPad users.
I agree that iPads are nice machines that are well-suited to online bridge play.
Thanks for your patience.

I cannot imagine Bill Gates ever buying an ipad, an iphone, an ipod, or any other apple product.

I once saw an interview in which he said his wife and kids all wanted iPhones, but that there was a family rule against owning any Apple products that they were just going to have to honor.

I didn't realize the recession had hit him that hard.
I believe that the USA currently hold only the World Championship For People Who Still Bid Like Your Auntie Gladys - dburn
dunno how to play 4 card majors - JLOGIC
True but I know Standard American and what better reason could I have for playing Precision? - Hideous Hog

Then things have changed in the past decade for Gates, because he did an awful lot of demos in the 90s on Macs and Microsoft makes a lot of money off their Mac applications.

If anyone is going to be there (like I said, Berlin), see if they will try BBO's Flash version on it. the screen should be big enough to work nicely. I got no idea if the product will be good or not, but some features (earphone plug, correct screen size for video, usb port for external storage) are attractive. G3 seems a little dated.

Is there a specification for how information is transmitted to and from BBO servers?
